R.E. Coffey Inc. Takes Morganton Chair into New Millennium
The R.E. Coffey, Inc. purchase of Morganton Chair has been an adventure for Rick Coffey. Operating two facilities located in Lenoir, NC, his manufacturing objective is to compress time cycles utilizing a combination of methodologies including flow process, just-in-time and cellular. Coffey talked with Modern Woodworking about his ongoing vision.
"Our ability to specialize in the accent chair and occasional markets allows us to offer value and service in the market place for our customers," says Coffey. "We have introduced an array of new styles focused at the medium price points for the occasional accent lounge chair residential markets. This 25-piece collection is called Heirlooms and consists of styling categories including mission, arts and crafts, transitional, French, country French, traditional and 18th century.
"Following the prior owners’ retirement, the remaining management team stayed intact and has quickly adapted to the demands of new products, processes and systems implementation. Our objective is to become America’s premier exposed wood specialist."
Morganton has included a Windows® NT intranet network with upholstery software designed by DJM systems which allows better materials, inventory and manufacturing process management, he explained. Of the future, Coffey looks to the past. "Our strong established foundation allows a quick response to the growing demand for medium priced, exposed wood upholstery."
