Modern Woodworking gets a very special visitor

by David Welch

It’s not every day that a publishing company plays host to the front runner for the next presidential election, but today, even as I write this, Randall Publishing Co., publisher of Modern Woodworking, is hosting Governor George W. Bush. Bush, in town for a fund raising dinner, spoke to Randall employees about his plan to save social security. Bush chose Randall because the company, listed by Folio magazine as the sixth fastest growing publishing company in North America, epitomizes the “American Dream.” “The entrepreneurial spirit is a powerful part of the ‘American Dream,’ Bush said. “When I read the history of this company, I was struck by the fact that it was started by a man (Pettus Randall) who decided he wanted to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity out there and own his own company.” Look for more complete coverage of the governor’s visit in our August issue, as I am told that I will have the chance to ask a few questions later in the day. That is, if I can get through the army of secret service men.

News and notes
You have come to the end of our IWF2000 issue. I would like to personally thank organizers at IWF2000 for their cooperation in getting you the most complete pre-show coverage in the industry. It is our hope that every one of you out there can attend IWF2000 this year, but understandably, there will be a few of you staying home. Someone has to watch the shop right? That is why we are bringing the Fair to you. On August 24th, the first day of the Fair, you can log onto www.modernwoodworking.com to find hourly updates from the Georgia World Congress Center and Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Modern Woodworking’s entire staff of editors will be on all floors armed with digital cameras and lap top computers in an effort to bring those logged on at their own computers the latest in technologies unveiled in Atlanta. Our Target Technology Live Online efforts will provide the industry web surfer with new machinery and products; interviews with Fair organizers, attendees and exhibitors; and the Challenger Award winner announcements—all updated every hour for the duration of the four-day event. If you are at the Fair, stop by our booth 2E30 and let Shannon Boyd, web designer for Modern Woodworking, take you on a tour of our web site. He will be in the booth and logged on for all four days of the Fair.

Speaking of the web…
I want to take this opportunity to invite our readers to our web site’s “Wood Shop Forum” page. This is where you are asked to pose any questions you might have, or answer any that you see. We are building a community of professionals to share ideas and information. Who knows? We may pick your question or answer to use in our magazine as well.
