North American Furniture Suppliers Eye Exports

By Mike Botta

Taking advantage of the weak dollar, pent up demand and a strong German economy, U.S. and Canadian companies plan to pursue export opportunities in Europe again, according to trade show organizer Koelnmesse Inc.

More than 40 North American companies are scheduled to showcase their products during Interzum, an international trade show for suppliers to the furniture production and interiors industry, set for May 25-28, 2011 in Cologne, Germany.

The biennial Interzum will be followed by Ligna, a large international event for the Woodworking and Wood Processing Industry May 30-June 3, 2011 in Hannover, Germany.

Collaboration is Key

The collaboration between the two leading wood industry events in the world in Cologne and Hannover this spring provides a rare opportunity for North American suppliers who are keen to make up for lost ground via export sales, Mette Petersen, president of Koelnmesse, said.

“Like in past years, we are offering a North American group exhibit for lumber and veneer suppliers in Hall 5.1 as well as a second group for bedding material suppliers in Hall 10.2 where we regularly team up with the International Sleep Products Association,” Petersen said, adding that a single contact is available in the U.S. so that exhibitors do not have to communicate with overseas display and service companies located in overseas time zones.

10 Halls Featured

Interzum will be held in 10 Halls of the Koelnmesse fairground and is expected to highlight innovations and trends for materials, components, surfaces, fittings, fabrics and equipment for furniture production and interior living spaces.

Interzum attendees typically include furniture manufacturers, architects, interior designers, product developers, consultants and trade professionals. The previous event drew 47,000 visitors from 130 countries and some 1,300 suppliers, according to Koelnmesse.
