Perennial Wood Now Targeting Outdoor Applications

By Mike Botta

February 23, 2012 The Eastman Chemical Company earlier this month introduced its outdoor line of trademarked Perennial Wood products to the building and construction trade.

Targeted were makers of outdoor wood furniture and builders and remodelers looking for new outdoor decking options.

The Perennial Wood line uses Eastman’s proprietary TruLast process that permanently modifies the wood, providing a physical barrier that’s warranted to protect against rot, decay and movement for 25 years.

It is three times more stable than unmodified wood, resulting in less shrinking and swelling that cause cracking, cupping and warping, according to the company. Since it is real wood, manufacturers don't need special tools or machines to work with it.

“Eastman is proud to bring Perennial Wood to the residential construction and remodeling market,” Greg W. Nelson, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Eastman, said. “We are no stranger to the industry, as 13 percent of Eastman’s 2010 revenues were derived from sales of materials, chemicals and polymers to building and construction manufacturers.”

Applications

The company is now marketing the decking line at about 100 Lowe’s stores, select lumberyards and specialty deck dealers in New England, the company said.

Eastman currently is accepting inquiries from furniture manufacturers interested in incorporating Perennial Wood into their outdoor furniture and is collaborating with designer Eric Pfeiffer to create furniture collections that will be available to retailers later this year.

The product also is being offered to manufacturers for use in windows and doors. Additional interior and exterior applications are being explored.

Harvested from Southern pine, Perennial Wood is milled and processed in the United States.
